about

The second single from Penelope Antena's second album Beamorose is a powerful cover of John Martyn’s 1967 single Back to Stay. Penelope’s soaring vocal work and free-flowing piano arrangement emphasize the song’s original heartfelt character, casting a resonant ode to lasting love in the face of inevitable change.

Stemming from an impromptu writing trip to the US in 2019, Back to Stay is the first song Penelope recorded from Beamorose. Where her previous work had been written and produced as a solo effort from start to finish, Penelope aimed to incorporate musicians she’d met during her time in the states in an effort to give one of her all-time favorite songs an added dimension:

“Even though the John Martyn’s song is a guitar driven ballad, I wanted to give it a different, fuller feel with piano. I teamed up with Austin based Ballet pianist Joshua Piper, who kept it true to the original, but added an extra layer of emotion. Then multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Ylvisaker, who I met in Chicago, came in and added some beautiful guitar textures that gave the cover its ethereal grain.”

Penelope’s rendition of Back to Stay involves an especially personal visual accompaniment: found family footage captured by her daughter prior to France’s lockdown protocol.

“The music video was shot two summers ago by my then 11 year old daughter in Brittany (located in Northern France).  I decided to use this homemade footage because it reflected a pre-covid time, when everything was simpler, when we could still kiss and hug each other, pure carelessness…this is made even more obvious captured through the eyes of a child.”

lyrics

Although I've been away so many lonely nights
You know I'm back today, I'm back to stay in your arms
And though I've been around and lived the life I said I loved
You know without you honey, all I do is worth nothing
And honey, don't cry for me
Although there might be other people in my life well
Honey, on my mind, you will always find there's only you
And though you say you'll journey to some foreign land
Well I'll remember you, yes, and I'll be true to your memory
And honey, don't cry for me
And when at last you do come wandering home to me
Well I might look at you but it will be through the weeks between
And when I hold you it might not why I have
In the passing days, we might both have changed to something new
And honey, don't cry for me
Although I've been away so many lonely nights
You know I'm back today, I'm back to stay in your arms
And though I've been around and lived the life I said I loved
You know without you honey, all I do is worth nothing
And honey, don't cry for me
